Spokane is the largest medical services hub between Seattle and Minneapolis, and Salt Lake City to Calgary. Health care is the region’s largest employer, drawing patients to the city from four states and Canada.
The city attracts patients from Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Canada in addition to Eastern Washington. There are five major hospitals and more than 1,100 health-related businesses comprising about 18 percent of the Spokane metro area economy. Spokane is home to two medical schools, the University of Washington Spokane campus and Washington State University Spokane – each training 60 students/year. It is also a growing center for medical research and the development of health related products and technology.
If you aren’t into outdoor activities, you won’t experience the best of Spokane. No other urban area provides as many recreational opportunities so close to home. We’ve got a whitewater river running through downtown, miles of hiking and biking trails minutes from our clinic and hospitals. Get off your shift and you can be alpine skiing within an hour’s drive, or fly fishing for cutthroat trout or playing golf on five courses within 20 minutes. Need new gear? REI, The Northface, Cabela’s or one of a dozen bike shops can take care of you.
If watching team sports are more your style, attend a NCAA Zags basketball game, a Pac-12 football game at Martin Stadium, or short season class A baseball with the Spokane Indians. Interested in participating yourself? Hoopfest, the world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament is right here. As is Bloomsday, America’s largest timed 10k road race where nearly 50,000 people hit the course each spring.
If your idea of recreation is more inside than outside, Spokane offers you movie theatres, museums, art galleries, Broadway and concert performances, and more restaurants and wineries than you could ever visit during your three-year residency.
When you want to get away from the city, it’s a quick drive to incredible hiking and outdoor tourism that only the Pacific NW can offer. Or a 15-minute drive to the airport will get you to anywhere in the world.
